Like your other equipment, these can be of many types depending on personal preferences. Sometimes the weather will be warm and dry, so you might not even need a sleeping bag, however you should always carry one. Other times, to counter the cool night air in the wilderness you will need outdoor wear and other equipment. The shape, roominess and fabric feel of sleeping bags should be tried just as you would try out a new mattress at home. Whether you purchase a rectangular, taped, mummy or hybrid sleeping bag depends on how you intend to use it. Backpacking? Hunting? Family Camping? Scouting? Fast packing? For general-use family camping, rectangular bags are the most versatile. They can be opened flat for warmer conditions or mated to form a double bag. Tapered and mummy bags are among the warmest. They're compressible and pack up in a minimum of space. Check the temperature ratings of the bags to match them with your expected use. If you don't plan to camp in extreme cold, a three-season bag that will handle night temperatures down to 30 degrees is probably a good choice. Care and cleaning of your new sleeping bag. Use only oversized commercial front loading washing machine with a rotating drum action. DO NOT use top loading agitator style machines. These are the machines usually found at laundry mats. Wash in warm water with mild soap, detergent or specialty bag cleaning solution with the bag zippered closed. You can use a fabric softener in wash. But do not use detergents with bleach.
Tumble dry at low temperature in oversized commercial dryer. Or you can hang over a clothesline till completely dry. Do not store if damp. It will mold. Remember always for complete care and warranty information the manufacturer is the best source for information.
